GM runs damage control on the new Camaro, gives it new face

GM is scrambling to change things in the Camaro department, as the backlash over the new Camaro’s face has impacted sales.

To call the new face polarizing is not exactly accurate, as we’ve not heard one person who actually enjoys the looks.

Luckily, Chevrolet has heard the backlash and is actually doing something about it.

Complaints about the new face and the placement of the ubiquitous ‘bowtie’ badge have been listened to, and the changes are making an appearance in an upcoming SEMA show concept car.

Although the 2019 Camaro has already hit some dealerships, the SEMA concept car, finished in a new colour called “Shock Yellow,” previews some of the changes that are going to be made to satisfy loyal Camaro owners.

The blacked-out front bumper has been given a shock of colour; and the bowtie that previously resided there has been moved back into the centre of the grill where it would traditionally sit in a Camaro.

Official sales numbers have not been released, but we’ve seen enough comments from readers to know that the new front end was not well-received. GM Authorityreports “the take rate and interest in the vehicle have said to have dropped.” Ouch, that’s not good for the ‘Maro.

Chevrolet could also be contemplating putting the 2.7-litre turbo-four from the Silverado into the flagship sports car, which would increase power by 35 horses and put it in the same league as the 2.3-litre EcoBoost in the Mustang.

Hopefully, these changes reel buyers back into GM, and away from the Mustang competition, which is currently the top-selling of all the Pony cars in the segment and is getting close to revealing the new Shelby GT500 variant. Now all GM has to do is make it cheaper, and they’ve got a solid case against the competition.
